What you absolutely should not do with a watch winder
The most useful accessory for automatic watches is the watch winder. This device ensures that your automatic watch remains wound and therefore keeps running on time. If you do not wear an automatic watch and do not wind it manually, it will stop after a relatively short time. The automatic movement is dependent on movement. If this movement and manual winding via the crown is missing, the movement will stop. The watch will then stop with all the negative consequences, namely that the watch no longer displays the time accurately.
Watch winders are available from all kinds of brands and in all kinds of shapes and sizes. We have written various articles about what to look for when you want to buy a watch winder. But what should you look for when using this watch accessory? What should you do and not do? The most important question is; what should you absolutely not do with a watch winder?
Let's start with this most important question. A watch winder is a device with one or more motors that rotate and thus provide automatic watches with energy. These motors are often of Swiss or Japanese origin from respected watch winder brands. The motors are connected to a gearbox where the gears slow down the movement of the motor so that these motors can be used in a watch winder.
Unfortunately, what often happens is that users of a watch winder place and remove their watches while the watch winder is still running. In this case, the cup in which the watch is placed or will be placed is manually held still, while the specific motor continues to turn. This creates friction and stress for the gearbox. It is then possible that gears in the 'gearbox' break off. This will cause the motor and gearbox to make more noise (rattling sound) or even break completely. The only solution is then to replace the entire motor module. This can be an expensive repair given the new part but also because the watch winder must be opened and fully tested after the repair. This is labor-intensive.
We therefore always advise our customers (via a card that is supplied with every watch winder, regardless of brand or model) to stop each motor before a watch is placed or removed. This prevents wear and defects, so you can enjoy your valued watch accessory for much longer. It is also important to mention that many brands completely exclude defects that have arisen because the watch winder has not been used correctly from the warranty.
A good watch winder is not cheap, we are talking about an accessory for automatic watches that is technically quite complicated. After all, this accessory is equipped with multiple motors, computer chips and a control panel in the form of an LCD or touchscreen. It is therefore best to handle this watch accessory correctly so that your automatic watches are safely and professionally supplied with energy for years.
What you should absolutely not do with a watch winder is to place or remove watches when the watch winder is in operation, or in other words, when it is rotating.
